I am curious, is there a way to automatically register a player when they connect to the server?

I'm not sure there would be any point. All !register does is put a user in the 'User' usergroup. Yes, there's a way (you could have the query to add a user give them group_bits 1 not 0, but unless I'm missing something, there's no real need.

I was just trying to get rid of the need for a spam prompting people to register.

couple ways you could go here :
1) edit b3/conf/plugin_welcome.xml and change <set name="newb"> to read some other text
also setting  <set name="newb_connections">15</set> to 1

or

2) remove <plugin name="welcome" priority="9" config="@b3/conf/plugin_welcome.xml"/> from your b3.xml
