I saw there is an unfinished version 2 of echelon available for downloading, and I am seeking for advice whether to install it.
Also, I have a doubt : can I lose information stores in echelon´s sql tables upgrading to the version 2?

Thank you very much

I know there are new tables in v2, i wouldn't install it without a backup.

Just remember it is in development still...

I believe it to be stable, but there are known bugs that are frustrating, that don't exsist in echelon 1, and there will always be lurking things. (Like installing on windows is causing no end of problems for people). Echelon2 is not yet feature complete though, keep that in mind.

Echelon2 by default looks to use a database named echelon, but that can be easily changed when you install it, I run echelon2 right next to echelon 1, my clan admins with echelon 1, and I write echelon2. For what it's worth I have not pushed my clan into echelon2 yet, so past testing it I am not yet going to recommend it over echelon 1.

Echelon 2 has a bunch of new tables, but there are no table name overlaps between echelon 2 and 1. (All echelon2's tables are prefixed as ech_ while echelon 1's are not)

If you are going to try echelon2 grab it from the link in my signature, rather then the link from the main site, as the one there is a bit outdated, and will be difficult to use. (IE theres a bunch of bug fixes that had to occur such that it worked at almost the level of echelon 1).

I installed echelon v2 but it asks me for a registration or that I log into echelon.
It asks me to provide an email address and database related data, what I do, but then it shows that has been an "error", that the email couldn´t be sent. I don´t know how to log after all that bloody work!
Please, I need help.

*edit* my server has no php email function , how can I overcome that difficulty and log in? I haven´t had  that problem installing echelon v1

I feel frustrated because I spent a lot of time enabling the php email function which I don`t need at all, all that work was just for the sake of getting a username and password to access to echelon "v2".
hMailServer is not working, I don´t know why, and now after hours of hard work  I am getting nothing.
I don´t know why you did this so difficult.

There must be an alternative way to log into echelon v2 without receiving any mail!

Echelon2 uses email to message the admins about hack attempts, to give other users accounts, allowing users to recover passwords etc.

Honestly, I inherited it with the email functionality, and it seems reasonable to use it like that. That said we had discussed adding an option to allow users to register an account rather then being emailed one. This could be extended to the initial registration.

Part of the attraction for emailing passwords is that you then have a record of the password, and you're email address is confirmed to be valid, rather then bad contact.

As mentioned this is not finished software, inconvenient things, and glitches are to be expected, which is why there is the test group for it, and it is not done. We have a seperate spot dedicated to testing it, bug reporting and suggestions to try and fix these things.

So, if I cannot  get the php mail to work, I wouldn´t be able to log in, that´s what you say.
Thus, many hours of hard and difficult work go to the garbage can because of an email?
It is unbelievable that I can´t modify the access system to set a password I could use to log in
It´s ridiculous that myself as admistrator need a confirmation mail.

Did you miss the part where feedback is needed about this sort of stuff? Calm down.

That said mail() is a core part of php, and can be disablded at compile time. Past that there are many many avalible tutorials about setting up a mail server to work with php, you're host operating system, and what mail server you want to use.

I do see you're point, as pointed out in what you quoted before, but it has not been done yet, as such it will have to wait until I can get to sit down and write that part.

With that said, I guess I won't be using Echelon 2. I run my B3's on a VPS where I don't have an email server set up and I don't have the desire to muddle around with one to get it going.

I agree. I would have done the same, had I known about this issue from the beginning.
I wouldn´t have spent four or five hours dealing with things I dont´t understand, searching for and reading tutorials, risking to ruin the DB, echelon 1, etc. just to get nothing out of this, all because of a "confirmation email".

This is the readme form the package. Where does one read it is needed a php mail server enabled?

## Requirements ##
- Webserver (Aphace currently, other support coming soon)
- Version 5+ PHP (with my mysqli)
- MySQL DB (your B3 DB will work, but a seperate  one is advised)
- A MySQL user with connection rights to your B3 databases
- RCON details for the servers running B3 (RCON support is currently being phased out of Echelon)

## Installtion ##
// This is by no means a comprehensive guide, it is a quick guide to get any of you started
- Create a MySQL user to connect your B3 database from your Webserver
- Run the echelon.sql file on your database to create the Echelon tables
- Go to http://example.com/path/echelon/ and follow the installer
- Delete the install folder once the web installer is done
- Login to Echelon using the credentials that were emailed to you
- Setup and config your Echelon to your needs

For the "credentials that were emailed to you" I thought of a username and password that are assigned to the testers, which the tester may change latter, as it is seen in many other situations.

Hey, take it easy. Wicked it trying as hard as he can to complete this awesome project.
Part of beta testing is dealing with incomplete documentation, issues with the script, ect.
If it is not for you due to a mail server, then it is not for you. Simply withdraw and be done.

If it is not for you due to a mail server, then it is not for you. Simply withdraw and be done.

It is nothing personal against anyone, I know he may be trying hard to complete the project, and I am not mad at him personally, or anyone else, but what pisses me off is that I am not asking for support on echelon itself, but for a "simple" registration, and that I can´t get a solution as simple as "do this to register and you´re done", and what pisses me more is to be forced to withdraw after spending time and effort on something, as I am actually forced to.
Well, I guess this is the end of this thread.  I´ve gotten a vivid reply to the question of this topic. "It is not advisable to install echelon v2 yet!"
I just wanted to make my point as you made yours on this issue, and effectively,  it´s time to "withdraw and be done".
